Installation Notes for Lexmark PrintersIf your printer comes with extra trays and/or a duplexer, the duplexer must be positioned directly below the printer but above the extra trays.
Align the right hand side of the printer with the right hand side of the duplexer or extra tray. On some models, the left hand side of the printer may have a bulge which makes it more difficult to align. Lower the printer directly down on top of the duplexer or extra tray. A second person can be helpful in lining up the components. Install your chosen paper (type and size) in the appropriate paper trays. Adjust the paper clamps in each tray so that the paper is held firmly in position. Check that the rear paper clamp in each tray is set precisely in the appropriate position, eg A4, A5, letter, legal, etc. If the clamp is not in the precise position, you will not be able to select the appropriate paper size on the control panel. Check that the right hand paper clamp in each tray is set firmly against the edge of the paper - otherwise the paper may skew during printing. Connect the printer to your computer as a local printer using a parallel cable (compliant with the IEEE1284 standard, bi-directional cable) or a USB cable as appropriate for your printer model. Alternatively, connect the printer to your network using a Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable. A USB connection is approximately 30 times faster than a parallel port and a 10/100 Ethernet network connection is almost 300 times faster. Cables are not supplied with the printer as the type of cable required varies with the installation. The cable connections are on the left-hand rear of the printer. After everything is installed in position, connect the power cable (rear left-hand side) and turn the printer on. Wait until the LCD panel shows "Ready". All commercial duty Lexmark printers come with a power-on light, a five-button control panel and an LCD to display menu options and error messages. By using the control panel, the user can adjust a comprehensive set of parameters that govern the operation of the printer. The buttons are labeled: Menu, Select, Return, Go and Stop. They are also numbered 1, 2, .., 6 so that a security PIN can be used to control the printing of sensitive documents. Control Panel Buttons< Menu >

The printer should print a single page with a menu map showing all the options available on the control panel. It will also show the printer serial number, page count, firmware version, the amount of memory installed and any optional paper trays, internal print servers (network cards) or duplexer that may be installed and recognised. In the Utilities menu, you may also choose to print the network menu, a demo page, and a list of PCL or Postscript built-in fonts. If you want the printer to switch automatically between trays (eg between Tray 1 and Tray 2 when Tray 1 becomes empty), you need to set the same paper size and paper type for each tray. If one tray is set to A4, plain paper and the other is set to A4, letterhead, the printer will not automatically switch between trays. You will also need to set the paper size and paper type for each tray in the printer driver software on your computer (see below). Installing Printer DriversOnce you are satisfied that the printer is physically installed and working, you will then need to install the printer drivers on your computer. We have supplied you with a CD containing the latest drivers and the installation instructions are on the CD cover. Choose the drivers that are appropriate for your operating system, eg Windows XP. Alternatively, you can download the latest drivers from www.lexmark.com If you are installing the printer on your network (as opposed to a local printer installation) you will need to set its IP address, NetMask, and Gateway by using the Network menu on the printer's control panel. If you do not have this information, you will need to obtain these settings from your network administrator or ICT support person. Printer ManualsYou have also been supplied with a CD containing a set of User Manuals for your printer. The manuals are in Adobe PDF format. Each set usually contains a Setup Guide, Product Overview, Quick Reference Guide, User's Guide, and Technical Reference Guide. We recommend that you print a copy of the Quick Reference Guide and keep it near the printer. We also recommend that you copy the pdf version of the User's Guide to your desktop for ready reference.
